About the painting

A woman in meditation as the evening sky catches fire behind her.

A woman sits cross-legged in meditation, her face lifted and her eyes closed as the evening sky catches fire behind her, the last of the light on her hair. This was only my third painting, and fabric was still very new to me. Up close, the sky is a mass of loose, abstract marks in orange, rose and violet; step back and it becomes an evening sky, with her calm at the very centre. That's what stillness feels like to me. The world keeps moving, but something in you doesn't need to. Heaven and earth meet right here, in you.

Living with it

  • Two paintings in one: loose, abstract colour up close, and a calm figure against an evening sky from across the room.
  • Hangs without a frame on a hidden sub-frame, about 1.5 cm off the wall, so there's nothing between you and the painting.
  • One of one. Every mark was made by hand, and it can't be repeated.
